Acute pressures at work and at home are driving more and more executives and employees to meditate rather than medicate away their stress.

But the benefits of their twice-daily meditation practice may extend beyond stress reduction. Sophisticated brain imaging and EEG studies show that one meditation technique in particular—Transcendental Meditation—strengthens the connections of the prefrontal cortex, or “CEO,” of the brain, which governs such “higher” executive functions as decision-making, judgment, and planning.

On Wednesday, June 6, a panel of top CEOs and executives and researchers and physicians will gather at American University to explore the growing use of meditation in the workplace (www.tmbusiness.org).

Conference panelists will include 30-year meditator Ramani Ayer, Chair and CEO of The Hartford Financial Services Group; Jeffrey Abramson, partner of The Tower Companies, one of Washington’s largest commercial developers where over 50 percent of employees meditate; Steele Belok, M.D., an internist on the faculty of Harvard Medical School; and Andras Simonyi, Hungarian Ambassador to the United States.

In addition, Dr. Fred Travis, director of the Center for Brain, Consciousness, and Cognition at Maharishi University of Management, will present a rare live EEG demonstration of the brain wave changes that occur during TM practice.

Research funded by the National Institutes of Health has shown that TM also markedly reduces high blood pressure, atherosclerosis, bad cholesterol, stroke, congestive heart failure, and diabetes.

Transcendental Meditation is a simple, easily-learned procedure, practiced 15 to 20 minutes twice daily, which allows the mind to settle down to a state of deep inner calm and wakefulness while the body gains a profound state of rest and relaxation.
